We will be presenting to other art educators from across the state of Wisconsin this weekend on our traveling art bins. This is a great opportunity for us to learn from others and to share what we have learned about applying for grant opportunities for our students. Already this year, we have seen great success with the art supplies and lessons that Monroe elementary students have access to. This is all because of the generosity of the Excellence in Education and Wisconsin Art Education Association.
Through the grant money for the traveling art bins we were able to purchase all of the supplies needed for students to glass fuse in our clay kilns. Northside Elementary started the year with this bin, and all 5th grade students were introduced to glass fusing with the creation of a magnet. Check out the students hard at work!

This money has been used to purchase supplies that our normal budgets would not normally support. These supplies have been divided by the mediums of printmaking, glass fusing, and fibers and have been put together into bins that will rotate through the three elementary art rooms. This program of rotating art bins with reach 1,000 elementary artist in Monroe! We are looking forward to an awesome year in the art room with all our new supplies!
Julia, Briana, and Sarah Northside Elementary held its annual "Open House" for families at the end of April. Students toured the school showing their families what a day at Northside is like.
To prepare, the art room for this event, it was turned into a museum that highlighted the chronological order of the history of art. For this event, student projects focused on major time periods throughout history. During art class of open house week, students toured the museum and got to learn more about each period of time in history. The museum highlighted a few projects from each grade along with famous masterpieces. The tables were filled with clay work form the second semester and the community of Northside LOVED the museum experience. The entire exhibit of student work was on display throughout the school for families to tour. Friday, March 31st was a wrap on Youth Art Month as Wisconsin celebrated with their closing awards ceremony at the State Capitol! Student work has been displayed in the rotunda over the last several weeks for all to see. A handful of works were chosen as award recipients and honored at the celebration too. A total of 9 elementary students in Monroe, 3 from each school, had artwork on display for the celebration. It was great to see such a large turnout in support of art in Wisconsin schools!
For the third year in a row, the Monroe Art Department collaborated with the Monroe Arts Center to curate a student show in the Monroe Clinic. Each year art teachers decide on one theme for all artwork to be inspired by. This years theme was, Wild Things. Each student and teacher interprets the theme as they wish. One student from each grade, at each school is selected to have their artwork included in the show. Art work will be on display through May of 2017 at the Monroe Clinic and Hospital in Monroe, WI.
If you are looking for a fun arts adventure during spring break I’ve got the place for you! The Madison Museum of Contemporary art is currently hosting art by the phenomenal artist Do Ho Suh. Suh’s work explores the complex concepts of home, identity and memory through the three-dimensional recreations of spaces that he has lived in. In this exhibit Suh allows the viewer to be transported to his apartment in New York City. Guests are welcome to walk through a full-scale fabric rendering of his environment.
My favorite aspect of this show is observing the extreme detail that the artist has incorporated into each and every piece of the apartment. Everything right down to the text in the breaker box is recreated through fabric and stitching as one would see in real life. The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is free to the public and Do Ho Suh’s exhibit will be up until May 14, 2017.
